GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay softball team (10-22, 4-8) swept Saturday's double header against Horizon League foe Youngstown State (11-35, 5-16) to improve to a perfect 4-0 at home this season. The Phoenix used solid pitching and timely hitting to defeat the Penguins 9-0, and 2-1, respectively.

In the first game, pitcher Anna Bluemel threw five solid innings giving up no runs, while striking out five. With her performance, Bluemel moved to 6-11 on the season.

Hitting was contagious in the opener, as Sara Junion, Vanessa Lefan, and Samantha Howe all tallied multiple hit games. Green Bay jumped on Youngstown State early in game one, as the Phoenix scored three times in the first inning. Junion tripled to drive in Jenna Woepse, Lefan then singled to drive in Junion, and pinch runner Jenna Nitti scored on a wild pitch.

Missy Schleicher's RBI double in the bottom of the fourth proved to be the game-winning hit. The Phoenix led by more than eight runs after five innings, which prompted the game to be called by run-rule.

Green Bay had to come from behind in the second game of the twinbill. The Penguins scored once in the fifth as Rochelle Vanyi doubled to left center to score pinch runner Jamie Fornal. The RBI double was the only run Green Bay pitcher Amanda Margelofsky gave up, as she pitched six strong innings while earning her second victory on the season.

The Phoenix responded in the bottom half of the fifth with two runs of its own. Melani Niederer singled to shortstop Katy Potokar, who attempted to get Ashley Billerbeck out at second base. The throw traveled into right field, allowing Billerbeck to score. Dana Brockman later singled to drive home Niederer for the game-winning run.

Samantha Schmeltzer pitched the seventh to record her first save of the season. The save was the first of the year for any Phoenix pitcher.

Green Bay will return to action Sunday to complete its three-game series with Youngstown State. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Ben Garot Field. It is Senior Day and the regular-season finale for the Phoenix.
