Strong Pitching Helps Green Bay Advance In Horizon League Tournament
May 8, 2008
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Green Bay softball team (11-23) advanced to the second round of the Horizon League Tournament after a 6-0 win against Butler. With the victory, the Phoenix plays regular-season champion Cleveland State today at 4 p.m.
Anna Bluemel led the way for the Phoenix with a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits while striking out six Bulldogs. Bluemel improved her record to 7-11, with two of her last three wins coming against Butler.
Offensively, Green Bay was able to strike early and often. Mollie Kaebisch led off the second inning with a solo home run, her second blast of the year. Then, in the next frame, Dana Brockman doubled to start the inning. Jenna Woepse advanced Brockman to third with a bunt single, and eventually stole second base. The throw by Bulldogs catcher Melissa Shofroth sailed into centerfield, allowing Brockman to score. Two batters later, Sara Junion singled to score Woepse from third.
Junion later went on to produce an RBI double in the fifth to score Brockman, who walked to lead off the inning. The offensive leader for the Phoenix, Junion went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
The Phoenix scored two more runs in the sixth inning. Missy Schleicher's RBI double scored pinch runner Jenna Nitti, and Kendra Woepse scored on a Bulldog throwing error.
Kaebisch, Woepse, Brockman, and Schleicher each tallied one hit for the Phoenix. On the day, Green Bay slugged seven hits and produced three walks from Bulldogs pitchers.
Green Bay and Cleveland State have not met this year, as their three-game series was cancelled earlier this year due to inclement weather.
