Green Bay Wraps Up Season-Opening Miken Dome Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. - For the second straight day, the Green Bay softball team ran into hot pitching at the North Dakota State Miken Dome Tournament. The Phoenix (0-5) dropped a pair of games Sunday, an 8-0 decision to Iowa State and a 7-2 contest to North Dakota State. In game one, Iowa State bolted out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first against Anna Bluemel (Wind Lake, Wis.) and never looked back. Bluemel settled down, allowing just three runs the rest of the way, but the damage had already been done. The Cyclones, which had no-hit Green Bay on Saturday, yielded just three hits on day two. The Phoenix committed four errors in the six-inning game, as two of Iowa State's eight runs were unearned. Bluemel, who allowed 11 hits but struck out five batters, fell to 0-2 on the young season. Against North Dakota State, Green Bay held its first lead of the season after plating two runs in the top of the second. Dana Brockman (Freedom, Wis.) and Jenna Woepse (Manitowoc, Wis.) each knocked in runs for the Phoenix. Both players had a pair of hits in the contest, and Woepse finished with a 3-for-7 effort in the double header to pace the offensive attack. Starting pitcher Katie Cooney (East Moline, Ill.) blanked the Bison for the first three innings, but NSDU broke through with five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Lynn was the star for North Dakota State, as she went 3-for-3 with two triples, three RBIs and two runs scored in the finale. Green Bay went 0-5 in the season-opening two-day tournament, but Mollie Kaebisch (Colgate, Wis.) was named to the all-tournament team.
