Green Bay Softball Picks Up Ivy League Split
March 14, 2008
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Green Bay softball team (1-6) earned a hard-fought split at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida, as the Phoenix played a double header against a pair of Ivy League teams on Friday afternoon. Phoenix starter Anna Bluemel fired a four-hitter in the opener, a 3-0 victory over Columbia. Bluemel fanned five and faced just 29 batters over seven frames to earn her first victory of the season in a complete-game effort. Leadoff hitter Jenna Woepse had two hits and scored twice to lead the Green Bay offense. She scored the first run of the game in the third inning after she singled and was tripled home by Krissy Hanson. Green Bay added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth by playing small ball. Woepse scored her second run of the game and Hanson tallied another RBI. In addition, Vanessa Lefan went 2-for-3 as the Phoenix rapped out eight total hits. In game two, the Phoenix came up on the short end of a 3-2 count. In a pitcher's duel, neither team was able to muster a run through the first five innings. However, Penn broke out in the sixth by plating two. Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh, Green Bay rallied for a pair of runs on a two-RBI base knock by Dana Brockman, one of her two hits. However, the uprising was halted and Penn came back in the bottom half with a one-out, game-winning single. Amanda Margelofsky suffered the loss, yielding three runs on eight hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. She fell to 0-2 on the young season. Green Bay managed just four hits compared to eight for the Quakers. The Phoenix played flawless defense, while Penn was able to work around four errors in the field. Green Bay continues play in the Rebel Spring Games Saturday. The Phoenix takes on Monmouth at 11 a.m. and then faces Robert Morris at 3 p.m. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
