Women's Tennis Defeats Valparaiso 4-3 for First Win of 2008 Season

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay women's tennis team earned its first win of the 2008 season Sunday with its 4-3 victory over Valparaiso at Western Racquet Club. Emily Lawent had a strong showing for the Phoenix, as she paired with Lauryn Grimando for an 8-0 shutout at No. 1 doubles before a 6-3, 6-0 straight-set win at No. 1 singles. Green Bay claimed the match's first point with a sweep of the doubles point. Along with Lawent and Grimando's shutout, Kelly Stadum and Laura Bartingale posted an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles while Callee Conda and Kari Petrashek were victorious at No. 3 doubles. In singles play, Green Bay's top three were victorious. After Lawent and Grimando tallied straight set wins, the day's final match was the decider, as Stadum rallied back for a 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. Green Bay returns to action April 11 with a Horizon League contest at Cleveland State. |
