UWM Men's Soccer Team Announces 2008 Recruits

Class of 11 players set to join Panthers

Feb. 11, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Head coach Jon Coleman announced his 2008 recruiting class today, as 11 players will enroll at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and compete next season for the UWM men's soccer team.

"We are all really excited about our new Panthers," Coleman said. "The staff has worked hard to identify a committed and talented group of players with strong academics as well as great personalities. Once we integrate the new Panthers with the existing Panthers and start developing team chemistry, this will be a very strong team. It is a diverse group that will give a lot of character and flavor to the current squad."

The 11-member group includes players from across the country. Five come to Milwaukee from Illinois, two from Texas and one each from Wisconsin, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Ohio. They are D.J. Alexander of Allen, Tex., Josh Barnes of Batavia, Ill., Evan Bartzis of Northfield, Ill., Nick Dundon of Ambler, Penn., Lucas Eichhorn of Dublin, Ohio, Eric Frazier of Flower Mound, Tex., Tony Maxey of Sioux City, Iowa, Stephen Romanello of North Prairie, Wis., John Shakon of Oak Brook, Ill., Ross Van Osdol of Peoria, Ill., and Joe Wehrli of Naperville, Ill.

"This year's incoming class has a lot of promise," Coleman said. "We are really looking forward to getting these guys in the mix to help strengthen next year's squad. The 2008 class consists of a wide variety of talent with a lot of passion and love for the game. It is a hard-working group that understands that commitment and dedication is what Panther soccer is all about. They are working hard to come in ready and will be hungry to compete for playing time."

D. J. Alexander

Alexander was a four-year starter on the varsity squad at Allen High School. He was also team captain for the club team Andromeda "90" that won the U.S. Youth National Championship in 2007. His team was ranked No. 1 in the country for the 2007 and 2008 seasons and has won the Texas State Cup for the past four years. He is also a member of the North Texas Olympic Development Program team.

"D.J. has great character and all the right tools to become a very good NCAA Division I player," Coleman said. "He has great defensive awareness, is very quick and relentless and has great ability to get forward. D.J. is a very quiet and humble young man, but once he steps on the field he is a dominant player that takes charge."

Josh Barnes

Barnes was a three-time All-Western Sun Conference selection at Batavia High School and was a three-time all-area honoree, including first team as a senior. He tallied three goals and seven assists from his center-mid position as a senior and was a four-year letterwinner. He also plays club soccer for the Chicago Magic and was a member of the Illinois Olympic Development Program team.

"Josh makes the best of every situation and opportunity," Coleman said. "He is a very composed player and doesn't let anything affect him. He has great leadership qualities and carries himself well on and off the field. Josh gives you stability and a strong presence on the field and is a player that could play in many positions for the Panthers and would excel."

Evan Bartzis

Bartzis played for the very successful New Trier High School program as a prep athlete. As a senior, he led the squad to a 21-3-1 record, recording 15 goals and nine assists. The team captain as a senior was also tabbed for special mention all-state honors by the Chicago Tribune. As a junior, he led his team to a state championship, scoring the winning goal in the title game. He has earned all-conference and team offensive MVP honors during his career.

"Evan is a very talented forward and will be a real threat on the attacking end," Coleman said. "Evan is an optimistic player with good technical skills and is a quality finisher. He has the ability to hold the ball in pressure situations and either turn and beat defenders or lay if off to a teammate to start an attack."

Nick Dundon

Dundon was a four-year starter at Hatboro-Horsham High School, leading them to a 14-7-1 record last season. The team captain as a senior was a first team all-conference and second team all-area choice after posting eight goals and six assists. He earned Suburban One League Honorable Mention honors as a junior and sophomore despite missing time with injuries. Additionally, he participated with his club team, FC Delco, in the final four of the 2007 U.S. Youth National Championship in Texas.

"Nick is a strong player and is a very focused individual," Coleman said. "What I like about Nick is he is all business. He is very determined to be the best player he can be. He will give us some size in the back and should be a dominant defender in the air and on the ground. He is a serious-minded player that is very intelligent and should be a leader in the back."

Lucas Eichhorn

Eichhorn helped his Dublin Jerome High School team to three-straight sectional championships. He was a First Team All-Central District and First Team All-Ohio Capital Conference honoree as a senior while serving as team captain. The three-year letter winner scored 11 goals as a senior - highlighted by four in one game - and has won five Ohio South State Championships with his club team, Eagles S.C.

"Lucas is a crafty player with a very good soccer sense," Coleman said. "He reads the game very well and puts himself in good position. Every time I have seen Lucas play he continues to get better and better. He has the ability to play on both ends of the ball, is very crafty and has the skill to beat defenders 1v1 and get some quality services."

Eric Frazier

Frazier joins the Panther program from Marcus High School and is on a team that finished last season at No. 1 in the final NSCAA/adidas poll. His team will look to defend its 30-0-0 record and state title this spring, when he will be a team captain. He scored 14 goals and had eight assists in the team's undefeated season a year ago and has helped them to a state-record 32-consecutive victories. He was named team newcomer of the year as a sophomore in 2006, scoring 14 goals and adding nine assists. That came after a 2005 season where he was MVP of the junior varsity team, recording 19 goals and five assists. Lastly, his club team, Andromeda "90", won the U.S. Youth National Championship in 2007.

"Eric is an all-around sound player," Coleman said. "He is tenacious and quick in and around the ball. Eric has the ability to cause havoc on opposing defenses. He is a serious-minded player that has great technical skills and could either play upfront or in midfield and make a difference for us."

Tony Maxey

Maxey comes to the Panthers from Dowling Catholic High School. The three-year letter winner was second team all-state last spring and has been a first team all-conference and Central Iowa Metro League selection in each of his first three seasons on the playing field.

"Tony has the ability to take charge on the defensive side of the ball," Coleman said. "He has great presence on the field and is a ball-winner with an appetite to start the attack. What I like about Tony is his competitiveness and desire to get better everyday. He is a strong player that has a calm, but determined, approach to what he does. Tony can take control of a game and make things difficult for the opposition."

Stephen Romanello

Romanello is the lone in-state product after playing at Kettle Moraine High School. The four-year varsity starter was a captain as a senior, leading the team to its first-ever state tournament berth in a 16-6-4 season. He was chosen First Team All-Classic 8 Conference his final two seasons and was honored as a member of the all-area and second team all-state squads as a senior, when he recorded 10 goals and added five assists.

"Stephen reminds me of one of our alumni, Kyle Lance," Coleman said. "He is a hard-working midfielder/forward with great speed and acceleration. He is a tricky player that will give us some excitement in the attack. Stephen is one of our hometown kids and is someone who makes the most of his opportunities."

John Shakon

Shakon brings an impressive resume in goal to the Panthers, most recently being named the Gatorade Illinois Boys' Soccer Player of the Year just this week. He led Hindsdale Central to a 20-8-1 season, finishing the year with a school-record 14 shutouts and 0.76 goals against average. The Chicago Tribune First Team All-State goalkeeper was also honored as an all-sectional and all-state choice by the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association and to the NSCAA All-Midwest Team as a senior. This fall, he was selected Team MVP, tabbed all-area by the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times, was the team captain and graduated with the career record for shutouts as well. He was also selected as the Suburban Life Publications Player of the Year. "John is an outstanding goalkeeper," Coleman said. "He has the ability to keep the ball out of net and elevates his game when he's under pressure. John is someone that is constantly striving for perfection and lets nothing stand in his way. He is a very serious-minded player and has a strong will to win. Coach Chris Dadaian liked John from day one and has developed a great relationship with him. Coach Dadaian is very excited to work with John and he knows that he will help strengthen the goalkeeper unit."

Ross Van Osdol

Van Osdol comes to UWM after starring at Dunlap High School. Van Osdol was a 2007 NSCAA/adidas High School All-American, leading his team to a 22-3-1 record while scoring 22 goals and recording 11 assists. He was named the Peoria Journal Star's Player of the Year and to the Chicago Tribune All-State Second Team. The three-time all-conference selection was tabbed all-Midwest as a senior and is a two-time all-state honoree. He was team MVP as a junior and senior, tallying 70 goals and 41 assists in his prep career. He is already off to a quick start on his UWM career, graduating high school early before enrolling at Milwaukee this semester.

"Ross reminds us a lot of a local talent and ex-Panther, Scott Kreitmeir," Coleman said. "Ross has good touch and great vision. It's also been good to have Ross here training with the squad to help him get acclimated with the college game and academics. He has adapted well and has shown he will fit in well with the squad. He is very excited to be here and is working hard to make an impact."

Joe Wehrli

Wehrli led Naperville Central to a final ranking of No. 6 in the Chicago Tribune's poll, going 19-4-1 on the year. He had six goals and eight assists for the team, finishing second in assists in school history. The three-year varsity starter was a two-time all-city and all-conference choice as well as the team captain as a senior. In addition, he has led his club team, Galaxy, in both goals and assists for the past three years.

"Joe is a talented forward that has a real knack for the goal," Coleman said. "Joe is a `buzz' player that can create scoring opportunities. He is an opportunistic forward and always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He is a blue-collar player that fits the bill of a UWM forward."

The Panthers overcame a slow start in 2007 to record a 5-2-1 record in Horizon League play that was good enough for a second-place finish. They then took UIC - which went on to advance to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight - to overtime in the semifinals of the league tournament before falling, 1-0.

"This is a group of quality players and people and we are looking forward to working with them to help develop them into great players and people," Coleman said. "They are serious-minded soccer players and are always looking for the next opportunity to play. We are looking for players that have the commitment level, talent and character to make Milwaukee soccer one of the most important things in their lives and this group will have the opportunity to continue to make this program something special."
