Gravengood And McCarty Set Records To Lead UWM Men On Day Two

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team fell to second place at the Horizon League Championships on Thursday, but not by much. The Panthers are close behind the leaders, just 21 points behind Wright State after setting two school records on the day. The Raiders sit in first at the midway point with 295 points with the Panthers right behind with 274.

Cleveland State is currently third with 240 points, UIC fourth at 237, Green Bay fifth with 204 and Valparaiso rounds out the list with 88 points.

Senior Chase Gravengood tied his own school record in the 200 IM, but came up 24-hundredths short of a league crown. His time of 1:50.06 was touched out by Cleveland State's Jakob Dobies time of 1:49.82.

Sophomore Jeremy Waldhart was also in the championship heat, taking eighth in 1:55.72 after a career-best time of 1:54.80 in the prelims. Freshman Matt Kluczinske also scored in the event, taking 10th in a season-best showing of 1:56.05.

Milwaukee had five swimmers in the finals of the 500 freestyle, with three of them in the championship heat. The trio of freshmen Bill McCarty and Dan Heraly and junior Robby Leibold finished in fourth, fifth and sixth place, respectively. McCarty touched the wall in 4:35.80, Heraly in a season-best 4:36.08 and Leibold in 4:36.24.

It was a good day in the 500 for McCarty, who also set a new freshman record in the race in the morning preliminaries in a time of 4:35.12, breaking the standard of 4:35.32 that Leibold established as a freshman.

 

 

In the consolation heat, junior David Adams placed 11th with a career-best time of 4:40.32 while sophomore Matt Mahoney was 16th in 4:49.90.

UWM beat its season-best time in the 400 medley relay by over five seconds, taking fifth in 3:23.85. The team of seniors Tyler Jefferson, Jeremy Seibel, Gravengood and freshman Jake Kalinowski did the honors.

Kalinowski then also led the way for UWM in the 50 freestyle, taking seventh in 21.06. Jefferson was also in the finals, taking 14th in a time of 21.44.

Day three begins tomorrow morning, with preliminaries starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time.
