Four Panthers Earn League Swimming & Diving Honors
Feb. 5, 2008
MILWAUKEE - Four members of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee swimming & diving team were recognized today by the Horizon League with Athlete of the Week and also with U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors. Senior Jess Kelly, junior Ashley Hall, sophomore Jeremy Waldhart and freshman Jake Kalinowski were all selected by the league office for the awards. Kelly earned Horizon League Female Swimmer of the Week honors, leading the Panthers to their first dual victory over Green Bay in the past 17 years. She was the only double-winner for UWM, taking first in the 50 freestyle (24.63) and the 100 freestyle (53.82). She also anchored the 400 freestyle relay team that came from behind to win with a 100-yard split of 52.33. Hall was the Horizon League Female Diver of the Week for the fifth time this year after she won one of the two diving events against Green Bay. She claimed a victory on the three-meter board with a season-best and NCAA Zone-qualifying total of 297.90 points and took second on the one-meter with 259.95 points. It took a career-best performance by UWGB's Kari Helland on the one-meter to keep Hall from the sweep. Kalinowski was selected as the Horizon League Male Swimmer of the Week after playing an important role as Milwaukee snapped its seven-dual losing streak to Green Bay. He won both of his individual events and anchored the winning 400 medley relay (3:29.16). In the 50 freestyle, he posted a winning time of 21.73 and followed that up with a mark of 47.49 in the 100 freestyle. In addition to the work in the pool, two student-athletes were also selected for their work in the classroom as well.
Waldhart was named the U.S. Army Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week, announced today by league commissioner Jonathan LeCrone. Hall was tabbed for the honor on the female side. Waldhart won the 200 backstroke against UWGB by almost three seconds last weekend, posting a Klotsche Natatorium record-time of 1:52.96 to extend his winning streak in the event to eight-straight on the season. He also swam on the runner-up 400 medley relay team and placed fourth in the 200 breaststroke. As a biology major, Waldhart carries a 3.978 grade-point average. He has been named to the Dean's List, as well as the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll. Hall wins the scholar award for the third time (she has swept the athlete and scholar-athlete awards each time) after helping boost the Panthers past the Phoenix with her 13th victory in 18 attempts this season. Academically, Hall boasts a 3.955 grade-point average as a business major. She is a member of the Horizon League Academic Honor Roll, as well as the UWM Dean's List. |
