Bucholz Paces Milwaukee To Fifth-Straight League Indoor Championship
KENT, Ohio (March 2, 2008) - Sophomore Tyler Bucholz won three individual events and ran with the first-place 4x400m relay on day two of the 2008 Horizon League Indoor Championships to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team to a fifth-straight league indoor championship. The Panthers tallied 176 points to win the meet going away, as host Youngstown State took second with 104.5 points. UIC was a distant third with 74 points, just ahead of Butler in fourth with 66. Loyola scored 42.5 points, while Detroit (36 points) and Valparaiso (28) rounded out the field. Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year, the 32nd coach of the year award of his career. Bucholz won championships in the 60m, 200m and 400m events, breaking a school and league record in the 400m. In that event, he ran a time of 47.61 to break the school mark of 48.33 and the league standard of 48.03. Sophomore Isaiah Adams also eclipsed both times, taking second in 47.74. In the 200m, Bucholz won in 21.82, just 0.13 seconds off the school record, and was followed by all-league second-team honoree senior Lynn Koepke in 22.20. Junior Patrick Casey also scored in the 200m with a time of 22.45 for fourth. Then, in the 60m, Bucholz topped the field with a time of 7.02, with junior Adam Schleis also scoring with a time of 7.08 to tie for fourth. Bucholz, Adams, Koepke and Casey combined on a league and school-record time of 3:16.89 to win another event championship. The school record had been 3:17.16, set in 2005, while the Panthers had also held the league mark of 3:19.09 they set at the 1998 meet.
Schleis, who defended his long jump crown from a year ago Saturday, successfully defended his 60m hurdle title Sunday. He finished the event in 8.29 for first and was joined on the podium by scorers senior Justin Bohler in third (8.41) and sophomore Josh Zill in fifth (8.55). Sophomore Quinn Mongoven and senior Darren Cole were also individual winners, while they teamed with Bohler and Zill on a strong showing over the field events. Mongoven repeated as high jump champ with a height of 6-8, while Cole scored in fifth place with a height of 6-2. Cole then won the triple jump for the third-straight season, and sixth time overall, with a jump of 48-2. Zill was runner-up to Cole with a jump of 46-7 ½, while Mongoven also scored in sixth (42-11 ¾). Bohler garnered second-team honors in the heptathlon, which wrapped up Sunday, as UWM scored in the second through fourth positions. Bohler notched 4,936 points, ahead of Zill in third with 4,346 and junior Adam Podd in fourth with 3,899. Senior Larry Ehrhorn capped the day two scorers with a third-place showing in the shot put. He threw 50-3 ¾ in the event. |
