(April 2, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's track and field team is back in action this week, heading to the Big Blue Classic Friday and Saturday in Charleston, Ill. UWM throwers dominated the Big Blue Classic last season as school records in the shot put, discus and hammer throw all fell. In addition to wins in all three events, Milwaukee claimed individual wins in the 100m and second-place finishes in three more events to take third as a team in the nine-team field. The Panthers will be competing in their second meet of the outdoor season after opening the campaign last weekend with some standout results at the Spring Classic. UWM finished fifth out of six teams at the meet last weekend, but got the season off to a good start. Sophomore Tyler Bucholz was UWM's story of the meet, as the broke the school record in the 400m and won the 200m with the second-fastest time in school history. In the 400m, he took second, but ran a sub-48.00 time for the third-straight meet, including the indoor season. He had been the first Panther to crack the 48-second mark in school history. At the league championships March 2, Bucholz ran an indoor school-record time of 47.61. He then ran 47.75 in the event at the Alex Wilson Invitational a week later. Sophomore Isaiah Adams is the only other runner in school history to eclipse 48.00, running 47.74 alongside Bucholz at the league meet for second. On Saturday, Adams took third in the 400m with the fourth-fastest time in school history (48.18). The duo also ran with the 4x100m relay that took second with the second-best time in school history. Senior Lynn Koepke and junior Adam Schleis filled out the relay.
Bucholz was not the only Panther that shined at the meet, as Milwaukee also got second-place finishes from senior Darren Cole in the triple jump, senior Justin Bohler in the 60m hurdles and sophomore Quinn Mongoven in the high jump. Milwaukee capped its indoor season with a fifth-straight Horizon League Indoor Championship and starts this season with its eyes set on the same thing outdoors. The Panthers have won the last four league outdoor titles and have won nine-straight league meets overall. This season's outdoor meet will be May 8-9 in Youngstown, Ohio. The Panthers will be in action next at the Sea Ray Relays next weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. |
