Trio of in-state swimmers set to join Panthers

Nov. 29, 2007

MILWAUKEE - Head coach Dave Griffore announced today the signing of three swimmers to National Letters of Intent to compete for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming team.

Danielle Chapman of New London, Wis., Jennifer Schober of Whitewater, Wis., and Sarah Wardecke of Appleton, Wis., have all signed and will compete for the Milwaukee women's swimming team next season.

The class is the second for Griffore, but the first where he has been able to spend the full year recruiting after being hired in August of 2006.

Chapman was a member of New London High School's state champion 200 medley relay as a senior, helping set a new school record in the process. She also placed sixth in the 50 freestyle and seventh in the 100 free at the state meet. She was a three-year state qualifier, taking sixth in the 100 free as a junior and sixth in the 50 free and fifth in the 200 individual medley as a sophomore. She was also named a member of the Appleton Post Crescent Athlete of the Week Honor Roll.

"Signing Danielle early is a nice start to us fixing up our sprint group for next season," Griffore said. "We feel like she is going to excel in our program here at Milwaukee."

Schober was a three-year state qualifier who helped lead Milton High School to Southern Lakes Conference championships each season of her high school career. She holds school records in the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, 500 free and as a member of all three relay teams. Last season, she placed fifth in the 200 IM and seventh in the 100 back at the state meet. As a sophomore, she placed second in the 200 free at state and was also a two-time conference champion in the 100 back.

"With the addition of Jennifer, we not only add a strong backstroker, but a great IM-er as well," Griffore said. "She will do very well in the longer events at the college level."

Wardecke joins the UWM program from Kimberly High School, where she swam for the Appleton West/Kimberly swim team. She earned All-American honors three years in the breaststroke and was selected Fox Valley Association Swimmer of the Year twice in her prep career. As a senior, she placed third in both the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. She won the 100 breast and 200 IM at both the conference (setting a new conference record in the 100 breast) and WIAA sectional meets and was part of five pool records at the conference meet as well. As a junior, she recorded a third place finish in the 100 breast and was seventh in the 200 IM at the state meet. She was named the Appleton Post Crescent Girls Swimming Athlete of the Year as a senior and junior and to its All-Area Girls Swim Team. As a sophomore, she earned all-conference honors in the 200 free, 200 IM and 200 breast en route to her first swimmer of the year honor.

"Signing Sarah is a big step forward for our program," Griffore said. "Sarah is one of the top swimmers in the state of Wisconsin and our goal is to recruit and sign those top kids. Her versatility will allow her to do great things here at UWM wherever we put her."
