Conrad, Weyandt Post Wins At Panthers' Outdoor Opener

Milwaukee posts 15 top-five finishes at Spring Classic

CARBONDALE, Ill. (March 29, 2008) - Juniors Beth Zimmerman and Jes Weyandt each won events and led 15 top-five finishers for the Panthers as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team took fourth at the Spring Classic this weekend.

Zimmerman won the triple jump, leaping 38-5 ½ for top honors. Weyandt, meanwhile, cleared 11-1 ¾ in the pole vault for first place.

Milwaukee finished with 108.5 points for third place, while host Southern Illinois took top honors with 274. Illinois State took second place with 173.5.

Aside from the pair of wins, the Panthers also had three second-place showings as a part of 13 more top-five finishes on the day. Junior Holly Nearman was runner-up in the 1500m, sophomore Kelsey Conrad took second in the 200m and UWM was second in the 4x400m relay.

Nearman ran a time of 4:40.56, the eighth-fastest time in school history, while senior Erin Magargee also scored in fourth place with a time of 4:48.91. Conrad finished the 200m in 25.28 and combined with senior Shannon Buttchen, sophomore Laura Ring and freshman Angie Kaufmann for a time of 3:55.57 in the 4x400m relay.

Zimmerman and sophomore Emily Budde joined Conrad and Kaufmann on the 4x100m relay, which took third in 48.88. Buttchen was third, individually, in the 800m with a time of 2:18.70, just ahead of Nearman in fourth (2:19.66). Sophomore Abbie Zaspel also had a third-place showing in the 5000m, crossing the line in 18:07.05.

 

 

Conrad, juniors Kory Olson and Jenni Saarinen, sophomore Jamie Woods and freshman Chelsea Von Ruden rounded out the team's top-five finishers. Conrad was fifth in the 400m with a time of 58.13, Olson placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 117-11 and Saarinen ran 15.66 in the 100m hurdles for fifth.

Woods threw 135-2 in the discus throw for fourth and Von Ruden tied for fifth in the high jump with a final height of 5-1.

UWM continues the early portion of its outdoor season, heading to Eastern Illinois' Big Blue Classic next weekend in Charleston, Ill.
