Saarinen Breaks School Heptathlon Mark In Tennessee

Junior breaks own school record, first to eclipse 5,000 points

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (April 11, 2008) - Junior Jenni Saarinen scored a school-record 5,021 points to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team in the beginning of the Sea Ray Relays Friday at the University of Tennessee.

Friday's action was cut short by rain, while the meet actually got underway with the start of multi-events. The Sea Ray Relays conclude Saturday.

Saarinen's point total eclipsed the school record she set in 2006 of 4,993. She placed seventh at the meet, while sophomore Kory Olson also competed in the event and took seventh with 4,563. Her score is fourth in school history.

The Panthers had a handful of competitors on Friday before the rains caused a postponement. Seniors Erin Magargee and Angie Huebner and juniors Holly Nearman and Danielle Magargee combined on a fourth-place finish in the 4x1500m relay with a time of 20:05.09.

Sophomore Kelsey Conrad and Angie Kaufmann competed in the 400m, with Conrad taking 33rd in 58.27. Kaufmann crossed the line in 58.88 for 41st. Freshman Chelsea Von Ruden also competed in the high jump and junior Liz Brothen in the open 3000m. Von Ruden tied for 21st with a final height of 5-3 and Brothen was 30th in 11:42.00.
