DES MOINES, Iowa (April 24, 2008) - Junior Holly Nearman broke the school 5000m record and qualified for the NCAA regional to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field on the first day of the prestigious Drake Relays.

Nearman ran a time of 16:47 to take third in the event. Her time eclipsed Cheryl Konkol's school-record time of 16:49.20, which she set in 1982, and the regional-qualifying time of 16:52.00. She is the first Panther woman to qualify for the regionals this season.

Junior Jenni Saarinen also had a top-five finish on the day, taking fourth in the heptathlon. She scored 5,013, falling just eight points shy of tying the school record she set in the event two weeks ago.

Three Panthers also competed in the 10,000m on the meet's first day, led by senior Angie Huebner in ninth place with a time of 38:29.34. Sophomore Abbie Zaspel took 10th in the event, crossing the line in 38:38.60, while junior Liz Brothen took 19th in 40:39.68.

The Drake Relays continue Friday and finish up Saturday. Milwaukee will also have athletes competing at the Janvrin Open in nearby Indianola, Iowa, and the Marquette Invitational, across town in Milwaukee, on Saturday.
