Panthers get head start on league meet, have final prep for remainder of meet

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 3, 2008) - Sophomore Kory Olson won the Horizon League heptathlon championship to give the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's track and field team a head start for next week's league championship meet Saturday at Butler.

The Horizon League held its multi-event championships a week prior to the remainder of the league championships, which will be held May 8-9 in Youngstown, Ohio. The remainder of the Milwaukee squad faced its final tune-up for that meet at the Redbird Classic in Normal, Ill.

Olson won her first career league title in the heptathlon, with sophomore Emily Budde earning all-league second team honors as runner-up in the event. The Panthers also got points from freshman Stacey Trzcinski, who took sixth. As of Saturday night, final scores of the event were not available.

At the Redbird Classic, sophomore Kelsey Conrad won the 200m to pace seven top-five finishers. She ran a time of 24.84 to win the event, with freshman Angie Kaufmann taking fifth in 26.70.

Sophomore Jamie Woods had two top-five finishes, taking second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. In the shot put, she threw 40-7 1/4 as runner-up, while throwing 139-11 in the discus.

Two Panthers were among the top five of the pole vault. Both junior Jes Weyandt and sophomore Erin Havener cleared 11-5 3/4, with Weyandt taking third based on the number of attempts. Havener placed fourth.

 

 

Senior Shannon Buttchen rounded out the team's competitors on the day, taking fifth in the 400m. She crossed the line in 1:01.13.
