Six Panthers Head To Last Chance Qualifiers This Weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (May 15, 2008) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's track and field teams will have six athletes in action this weekend at last chance qualifiers at Louisville's Cardinal Twilight and the Georgia Tech Invitational on Saturday. Sophomores Tyler Bucholz and Laura Ring will compete at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, while juniors Adam Schleis and Patrick Casey and sophomores Quinn Mongoven and Erin Havener will head to Louisville. Bucholz, the league champion in the 100m and 200m events, will look to qualify for the NCAA Regional in the 200m. He has run his personal-best time of 21.39 at two different meets this season. He won a league title in the event last weekend with a time of 21.41. To qualify for regionals, he would need to lower his time to 21.35. The men's 200m is scheduled for 5 p.m. central time on Saturday. Ring will also be in Atlanta, competing in her league-champion event, the 800m. She shaved 1.52 seconds off her previous best time in winning the league crown. She heads into the weekend with a time of 2:11.90, which moved her into third in school history in the event. The NCAA Regional qualifying time is 2:09.80. Her event is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. central time. Milwaukee already has two qualifiers for the NCAA Mideast Regional in senior Darren Cole and junior Holly Nearman. Cole qualified for the men's triple jump at two different meets this season, posting a best jump of 50-0 3/ 4 in winning a sixth career league triple jump event last week. Nearman, meanwhile, is qualified in the 5000m. She broke the school record in the event when she took third at the Drake Relays in 16:47.80. The regional meet is May 30-31 in Fayatteville, Ark. Schleis heads to the Cardinal Twilight looking to improve on his school and league-record 110m-hurdle time of 14.40 that netted him a third-straight league title in the event. He hopes to bring that time down to 14.30 to qualify for regionals. The running events will get underway in Louisville at 5 p.m. central time. Also in the hurdles, junior Patrick Casey will look to run a qualifying time in the 400m hurdles. He placed third at last weekend's league championships with a personal-best time of 54.25. The qualifying time in the 400m hurdles is 52.51. Mongoven and Havener are each perfect in league competitions in their respective events. Mongoven has won league championships in the high jump at the indoor and outdoor league meets in each of his first two seasons. He has cleared a personal-best height of 6-8 3/4 at two meets this season. The qualifying height is 6-10 3/4, a height he has nearly cleared indoors (6-10 1/4). Havener has not only won indoor and outdoor league titles in the pole vault in each of her first two seasons, she has also reset the league record in the event each time, as well. She has also broken the school record in the event twice this season, entering the weekend with a personal-best height of 12-3 1/2. The regional qualifying height is 12-7 1/2. The pole vault is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and the high jump 2 p.m. in Kentucky.
