Jan. 31, 2008
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Horizon League makes it a point to honor their student-athletes for their work in the classroom and on the athletic platforms. On Wednesday, Jessica Weidert, a senior on the swimming and diving team at Wright State, was honored as the Horizon League's Female Student Athlete of the Week.
Weidert had a solid week in the pool for WSU last week, helping the team to a dual meet victory over Xavier and setting a WSU Natatorium record in the process. The senior eclipsed her own pool record in the 200 Breaststroke as she posted a time of 2:21.06. The record was more than a second better than her previous time and beat the nearest competitor by nearly nine seconds.
The Spokane, WA native also won the 100 yd Breaststroke in a time of 1:07.00 and helped the 200 yd. Medley Relay team to a victory over the Musketeers. Weidert is undefeated for the season in the 200 yd. Breaststroke event (7-0) and is a perfect 3-0 when competing in the 100 yd. Breaststroke.
The Horizon League has also honored the senior twice this season with the Female Swimmer of the Week honor. Weidert won the award on October 24 and January 22 this season.
On campus, Weidert carries a 4.000 grade-point average as a modern language major. On top of earning High Honors each quarter at WSU, she was honored as one of four female athletes to win the Dr. Carl Benner Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award at WSU.
Weidert and the Raiders will close out the regular season on Saturday, February 2 at Cincinnati. The meet with the Bearcats will start at 1:00 on the UC campus.
