Gunn and Leonhard Named Captains for 2008 Season

Lizzy Gunn appears in the Raider record books for single-season and career block assists

April 25, 2008

Wright State head volleyball coach Trina Smith has announced that senior Lizzy Gunn and junior Lexi Leonhard will be the team captains for the 2008 season.

Gunn has been one of the top middle blockers in the Horizon League over her career as she has recorded 50 solo blocks and 325 block assists, good for seventh on the all-time Raider list. She ranked third in the league last season in blocks per set at 1.35 and fourth in blocks overall with 142 (19 solo, 123 assist). In League matches only, Gunn was third in blocks per set at 1.33 and sixth in blocks overall with 76 (7 solo, 69 assist).

Gunn's 123 block assists in 2007 were the eighth-highest single-season total in WSU history and her 12 block assists against Valparaiso last September 28 tied for the second most ever by a Raider in the 21 years that the program has been in Division I. She has also tallied 420 kills during her career.

Named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team in 2005, Gunn was also selected to the All-Tournament Team that season as she helped lead the #7 seed Raiders to the championship match before falling in five sets to Loyola.

Leonhard has seen action as both an outside hitter and as a libero in her two years as a Raider. Last season, she ranked fourth in the league in overall digs with 519 and eighth in digs per set at 4.29. In league matches only, Leonhard was fourth in digs per set at 4.87 and sixth in overall digs with 307. Named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Week on November 5, she has posted 905 career digs along with 87 kills and 37 service aces.

The 519 digs by Leonhard in 2007 were the third-highest single-season total ever in Wright State history.

Wright State, which posted an overall record of 14-18 in 2007, finished tied for second in the Horizon League standings with Valparaiso with a mark of 9-7. The Raiders return three starters and nine letter winners altogether in 2008.
