WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's tennis team fell to 0-9 on the season on Sunday evening at the WSSU Tennis Complex as they dropped a 4-3 decision to rival North Carolina Central University under the lights in Winston-Salem, NC.

 

North Carolina Central began the match by earning the doubles point as WSSU's Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter fell to NCCU's Trey Chatman and Brian Jackson 8-2 at first doubles and WSSU's Ryan Lindquist and Daren Milbourne were overpowered by NCCU's John Stephenson and Stephen Allsop 8-6 at third doubles.

 

The Rams' Troy Moore and Maximilian Glodde easily earned a win over NCCU's Jermaine Byrd and Joe Estevez at second doubles 8-2 yet the Eagles secured the match's doubles point.

 

North Carolina Central earned victories at first, second and third singles as WSSU's Brian Coxton fell to Trey Chatman 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at first singles; Maximilian Glodde fell to Brian Jackson 6-4, 7-5 at second singles; and Ryan Lindquist trailed John Stephenson 6-2 and 4-3 before retiring in the second set.

 

Victories in the first three singles matches would be enough to earn the Eagles the necessary four points four the match victory as NCCU recorded their first win of the season.

 

With the match already decided, the Rams showed tremendous heart as Troy Moore, Ian Hunter and Andrew Jones all earned victories in the remaining three singles matches (fourth through sixth singles respectively) yet came up one point shy of victory, ultimately falling 4-3.

 

The loss drops the Rams to 0-9 overall while the Eagles even their record at 1-1 overall with the victory.

 

WSSU returns to action on February 22 at 10:00 am as they face the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University at the MEAC Tennis Round-Up.  The match is part of a four-day event that will take place in Orangeburg, SC.
