Final Stats
BALTIMORE, MD - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-17) weren't able to overcome one of their worst starts of the season when the team took a 75-38 loss to the Morgan State Lady Bears (12-9), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams scored just 11 first half points against the Lady Bears, one more than the team's season-low 10 first half points against Delaware State earlier this season. Though the squad came back with a strong second half effort, the squad was not able to overcome the slow start to the contest.
It was the team's turnovers that proved the most costly to the Lady Rams as the team had ten more turnovers (25) than field goals (15) in the game, including hitting just three field goals in the first half of play. As a team, the Lady Rams shot 32.6% from the field while allowing the high-powered Morgan State team to shoot 38.5% from the field and 39.3% from the three-point line.
The outcome of the game could not, however, cloud some solid individual performances by the Lady Rams as freshman forward Vontisha Woods just missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds in the loss. Freshman center Vontisha Woods came close to her first career double-double with eight points and eight rebounds. The two players had a combined two points in the first half.
Morgan State jumped out early in the first half taking a commanding 12-2 lead in the first four minutes of the game. A Woods lay-up four minutes into the game was the first score of the game for the Lady Rams and sparked a 6-0 run that cut the Morgan State lead in half, 12-6 with 14:28 left in the half. It was then that Morgan State would take command of the game, outscoring the Lady Rams 29-5 in the remainder of the half. WSSU freshman guard Corbin Bradford would account for the remaining six WSSU points of the half with a lay-up and a three-pointer that were the only WSSU points for the rest of the half. The two scores came with nearly six minutes between them and the Lady Rams ended the half, going scoreless for the final seven minutes of the half.
The second half was much better for the Lady Rams as they scored 27 points in the half, just seven fewer than Morgan State. As a team, the Lady Rams shot 41.4% from the field in the second half. The Lady Rams were able to cut their deficit down no closer than 29 points when a Woods jumper left the Lady Rams trailing, 55-26 with 9:25 left. The Lady Rams would continue to battle down the stretch of the half, but in the end, the squad was never able to challenge for the game.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 2-17 on the season while Morgan State improves to 12-9. The Lady Rams will remain in Baltimore, MD to take on the Coppin State Lady Eagles in a Monday evening game at the Coppin Center.
