Lady Rams Heading to Washington, D.C. to Take On Howard

Feb. 15, 2008

GAME NOTES

WASHINGTON, D.C.- The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-19) will head to our nation's capitol seeking their first road win of the season when  they take on the Howard Lady Bison (2-20), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams held off the Lady Bison for a 63-61 win in Winston-Salem, NC earlier this season and will look for their first season sweep of an opponent this season.

The last meeting between these two teams was an exciting one with the Lady Rams battling from behind to pull out the victory. It was some stellar play in the final minute that keyed the win for the Lady Rams. A running lay-up by WSSU freshman guard Rene Rector gave the Lady Rams a 61-60 lead with three seconds left to play to put the Lady Rams on top before the WSSU defense would force a Howard turnover and foul that sealed the game. Fellow freshman forward Quintoya Mobley would seal the win with a pair of made free throws.

Since the last meeting between the two teams, the Lady Rams have notched only one win while the loss to the Lady Rams was the first of an eight-game skid by the Lady Bison, including home losses to Morgan State and Coppin State.

Both teams have had some defensive struggles with the Lady Rams allowing opponents to shoot 67.4 points per game while the Lady Bison are allowing 81.1 points per game to their opponents. WSSU freshman forward Vontisha Woods had a stellar performance against Howard the last time she faced the Lady Bison, notching her second career double-double. The freshman recorded 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds in the game. To this point, Woods remains the Lady Rams' leading scorer and rebounder at 9.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Saturday, she will match up against Howard's Tamaya Daniels, who is the team's leading rebounder at 8.6 rebounds per game and is the team's third leading scorer at 10.4 points per game. She is currently the fourth leading rebounder in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Lady Rams and the Lady Bison are scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off at the Burr Gymnasium on the campus of Howard University.
