WINSTON-SALEM, NC - A five-run fourth inning helped to propel the Winston-Salem State University women's softball team to their first win of the 2008 season on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the Morgan State University Bears by the score of 7-1 at Southpark Field in Winston-Salem, NC.
With the threat of rain and cold temperatures hovering in the low 40's, the Lady Rams wasted no time in entertaining the crowd of more than 60 fans on hand as they scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to earn a 2-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
A leadoff homerun by junior transfer Whitney Wright opened the scoring for WSSU as Wright smashed a fastball to the right field fence and legged out an inside-the-park home run to give WSSU a 1-0 lead.
Kayla Woodbury's triple would score Kendall Sutton only two batters later and WSSU held a 2-0 lead after only one inning of play.
Two runs is all that WSSU pitcher Ashley Boswell would need on the afternoon as she scattered 11 hits over seven innings of work and allowed only one run on the day while striking out five
A six-hit, five-run inning in the bottom of the fourth would give Boswell all the insurance that she would need as WSSU cruised to a 7-1 victory, WSSU's first of the season.
Carolyn Howard was saddled with the loss for the Bears as she pitched five innings, allowed 11 hits and surrendered seven runs while facing only 29 WSSU batters.
The win moved the Lady Rams to 1-2 on the season while
The two teams return to action at 1:30 pm when they square off in the second game of the doubleheader.
