Lady Rams Take 10-2 Loss to Western Carolina

April 16, 2008

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-19) couldn't hold off a late surge by the Western Carolina Catamounts (12-30) in a 10-2 loss at South Park Field Wednesday afternoon. After holding on to a 1-2 lead through the first three innings, the Lady Rams gave up nine unanswered runs to the Catamounts in the final three innings of the game to end the contest with the 10-2 loss.

The Lady Rams were able to get some hits in the loss, totaling five hits in the contest, but were unable to hold off a Western Carolina team that racked up 13 hits in the contest. WSSU junior infielder Devyn Gillette led the WSSU attack, going 2-for-2 from the plate. Lady Ram freshman infielder Brittany Hull was 1-for-2 from the plate with a run scored and an RBI.

After allowing a second inning run to the Catamounts, the Lady Rams answered in the bottom of the inning with a pair of runs on singles by Hull and WSSU junior pitcher Amber Shore. The two runs were all that the team could muster in the game, however. Western Carolina would go on to score nine runs in the final three innings of play to end the game and hand the Lady Rams the eight-run rule loss.

Shore (8-11) would take the loss for the Lady Rams, pitching five innings for the Lady Rams and allowing eight hits with six earned runs. WSSU sophomore Ashley Boswell threw the final inning of the loss, allowing a pair of hits and no earned runs.

The two teams would meet again to complete the doubleheader later in the afternoon.
