WT Baseball Claims First Win of Season in Doubleheader Split

ALPINE, Texas - The West Texas A&M baseball team broke into the win column for the first time this season on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader against Sul Ross State at Kokernot Field. The Buffs dropped the day's opening game by a score of 3-2, but exploded offensively behind three home runs from senior Brian Schupp to take the nightcap, 13-4.

The Buffs' record on the seasons now stands at 1-2 and the team will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Edmond, Okla., to open Lone Star Conference play against nationally ranked Central Oklahoma.

Game #1 Recap - (Sul Ross State 3, West Texas A&M 2)
After a marvelous pitching performance from senior lefty Bart Cannon, the Buffs look poised to earn the game one win, taking a 2-1 lead into the contest's seventh and final inning. Unfortunately for WT, the Lobos rallied to plate two runs in the home half of the seventh and escape with the victory.

Cannon limited the Lobos to only one hit through six innings and struck out six before leaving the game for reliever Tyler Lewis, who took the loss.

Shortstop Darby Walker was the only Buff to record more than one hit, collecting a single and a triple off Sul Ross starter Jaime Roho, who pitched six strong innings to pick up the win.

Game #2 Recap - (West Texas A&M 13, Sul Ross State 3)
After hitting a pair of home runs in WT's season opener on Friday, Buffalo second baseball Brian Schupp remained hot at the plate during Saturday's nightcap, where he went 6-for-6 with three home runs, five runs scored and seven runs batted in.

In the sixth inning, Schupp's second long ball of the day, a two-run shot, highlighted a three-run inning for the visitors. The Buffs ended their at bat during the frame up by a margin 9-0 which gave them an insurmountable lead that they were able to ride to their first victory of the season.

After Saturday's standout performance, Schupp now leads the Buffs with a .643 batting average, five home runs and 10 RBI.

Senior right-handing pitcher Eric Henderson (1-0) scattered seven hits and three runs over 6.2 innings, while striking out 11 Lobos to pick up the win.

Centerfielder Justin Graham collected four hits, while WT leadoff hitter Darby Walker and left fielder Jake Parsons each score three runs.
