CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M baseball team didn't start off Tuesday's game against Wayland Baptist like it had hoped, as the Pioneers plated four runs in the first inning, including a leadoff home run by Brett Cook on the second pitch of the day, in route to a 19-6 victory at Conner Park.

Chris Nettles (1-0) picked up the win for the Pioneers while Brandon Head (0-1) took the loss for the Buffs, who fall to 7-24 on the season.

Wayland jumped out to a five-run lead after the first two innings, with Todd Jeffers driving in three runs in the top of the first with his first of three home runs on the day. The Pioneers bats stayed hot throughout the afternoon, scoring five runs in the third, and three in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames.

WT cut into the Pioneer lead in the top of the third as Kent Wright led the inning off with a double to right center and was able to score on a two-out single by shortstop Darby Walker. The Buffs scored two more runs on a fielding error in the outfield, cutting the score to 10-3.

Walker drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with a single that scored Wright and Michael Dudley. The last of the Buffalo runs would come in the fifth with a Dudley single that scored first baseman Will McLaughlin.

The Buffs return to action this weekend with a trip to Stephenville, Texas, to face LSC rival Tarleton State.
