Buffalo Soccer Downs St. Mary's, 4-0
Sept. 30, 2007
CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M men's soccer team put their seventh win in the record books Sunday afternoon as it beat the visiting St. Mary's Rattlers, 4-0, at The Pitch. Freshman Ben Everson recorded his second consecutive multiple-goal game, scoring twice, while sophomore Aaron Thornton dished out the assists on both of Everson's goals. Thornton also added a goal of his own as the Buffaloes improved to 7-1 on the season. WTAMU dominated the offensive attack in the match, taking 23 total shots and drilling St. Mary's goalkeeper Jayson Horn with nine shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Shane Taylor made two saves on the Rattlers' only two shots on goal. Everson opened up the Buffaloes' scoring in the fourth minute, taking a pass from Thornton at the top of the box and lifting his shot over the advancing Horn. Thornton tallied his goal in the 15th minute when he sent the ball towards the goal from the left side of the field, just inside the Rattlers' half of the field. The ball sailed towards the right side of the net and bounced in just inside the goalpost to put the Buffs up 2-0. Junior Oliver Mulamba rounded out West Texas A&M's first half scoring tirade when he headed the ball inside the right goalpost off of a corner kick from Tommy Nutter. In the 60th minute, Everson scored an insurance goal for WTAMU, his second of the match. Thornton sent the ball to the far post from the top of the box on the left side and Everson pushed it past Horn to give the Buffaloes a 4-0 advantage. The Buffaloes are next in action when they head to Golden, Colo. to face Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. and Ft. Lewis at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 7. |
