WTAMU Men's Soccer Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End

Espanho Da Costa scored his first goal of the season

Sept. 21, 2007

CANYON, Texas - In this season's first Southwest Soccer Conference match at The Pitch, West Texas A&M men's soccer fell to No. 13 Midwestern State, 3-1, on Friday afternoon, snapping a five game winning streak. Midwestern State scored in the 13th minute and held the lead for the rest of the game, scoring two more goals before WTAMU scored at 74:50 with a goal from junior Espanho Da Costa. Sophomore Jacob Fynboe Jensen had the assist for West Texas A&M in his first game back after recovering from an injury.

WTAMU almost scored just three minutes into the match when Ben Everson launched the ball over his head and into the box, and Itamar Keinan fired a bicycle kick shot that just narrowly sailed over the crossbar.

Kyle Kmiec scored the Mustangs' first goal on a one-touch volley from Tyler Murphy to put the Mustangs up 1-0. Just over ten minutes into the second half, Ahmad Ihmeidan scored on a give and go from Kmiec, scoring from eight yards in front of the net. Midwestern State's third goal came when WTAMU's goalkeeper, Shane Taylor, mishandled a pass; Jeremy Elder shot the ball into the open net from inside the box.

Da Costa put West Texas A&M on the board in the 75th minute when he took a pass from Jensen at the top left corner of the box and fired his shot to the right side of the net.

Senior Kenneth Christensen played brilliantly in the back, stopping one break away and two 2-on-1 opportunities for MSU. Taylor faced nine shots on goal and made three saves.

The Buffaloes out-shot the Mustangs but were unable to convert more than once because MSU goalkeeper Jeremy Turner made six saves and had his defenders stop two other shots.

With the loss, WTAMU falls to 5-1 and 2-1 in the SSC. MSU improves to 7-1, 3-0 in the conference.

The next Buffalo match is Sept. 26 when the men travel to Portales, N.M. to face SSC foe Eastern New Mexico.
