Lady Buffs Win LSC South Opener over TWU, 5-0

DENTON, Texas - Taking a scoreless tie into the sixth inning and riding a marvelous pitching performance from freshman Shannon O'Dea, the West Texas A&M softball team's offense exploded for five runs to claim a win in its Lone Star Conference South Division opener on Friday, defeating Texas Woman's 5-0 at Pioneer Field in Denton, Texas. The Lady Buffs improve to 10-8 on the season and 1-0 in LSC South play. O'Dea faced 24 batters on the evening and allowed only one hit while striking out five hitters to improve her record to 6-3 on the season. In the dramatic sixth frame, junior Erin Hartigan led off with a bunt single and junior first baseman Brytany Lemon followed with a single to left field to give the Lady Buffs runners on first and second with no outs. After TWU record the first out of the inning, junior centerfielder Rachel Cavallaro reached on an infield single to load the bases and the set the table for sophomore Amber Farr. Farr, who has been swinging a hot bat at the plate, continued her strong hitting by doubling to left field to score all three base runners. A single by Kaitlyn Witte in the next at bat put runners on first and third and brought up Audrey Wallace, who drove in the fourth WT run of the inning with a sacrifice fly. Junior shortstop Breanna Adams put the final touches on the frame with an RBI single up the middle to press the Lady Buff lead to 6-0. O'Dea retired the final six Pioneer batters in order to seal the victory. The Lady Buffs are back in action against TWU Saturday as the two teams square off in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. from Pioneer Field. |
