March 1, 2008
DENTON, Texas - The Lady Buff softball team wrapped up a series victory in its first Lone Star Conference South Division set of the year by defeating Texas Woman's in the first game of a doubleheader at Pioneer Field on Saturday by the score of 9-4 in nine innings of play. WT returned to action in the nightcap of the twin bill but was unable to complete the sweep of the Pioneers, falling 4-2. The series win improves the Lady Buffs' overall record this season to 11-9 and its mark in LSC South Division action to 2-1. WT returns to competition next weekend at Lady Buff Yard when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville in a two-day, three-game series. Game #1 Recap - (West Texas A&M 9, Texas Woman's 4) WT starter Andrea Renteria (2-3) got hit hard in the bottom of the second inning as the Pioneers were able to plate four runs on five hits to take the initial advantage of the game. The Yuma, Ariz., native bounced back to hold TWU off the scoreboard for the next seven innings, striking out three along the way. The Lady Buffs' comeback began in the top of the third as freshmen Kaitlyn Witte and Audrey Wallace drove in runs to get WT on the scoreboard. Sophomore Amber Farr cut the TWU lead to 4-3 with an RBI ground out in the fifth and the Lady Buffs were able to tie the game at 4-4 on a bases loaded walk drawn by Erin Hartigan in top of the sixth. After a scoreless eighth, the Lady Buffs came to bat in the ninth and took complete control of the contest by scoring five runs on four hits. The frame featured a two-run double by Brytany Lemon and a run-scoring single from Christie Russell. Game #2 Recap - (Texas Woman's 4, West Texas A&M 2) Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth, the Lady Buffs' bats broke through to score their first runs of the game and tied the score at 2-2 on a RBI single from Farr and a run scoring error. The stalemate would not last long as the Pioneers plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory. In the circle, freshman Shannon O'Dea, who picked up the win in the series opener on Friday, took the loss in a complete game effort by allowing four runs on nine hits. |
