TACOMA, Wash. - Western Washington University freshman Megan Zukowski (Maple Valley/Tahoma) won the women's 100 meters, placed second in the 200 and ran legs on the victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relays as the Vikings won both the men's and women's divisions at the J.D. Shotwell Track and Field Invitational on Saturday at Baker Stadium. Western won the women's title by 55-1/2 points, 170-1/2 to 115 over second-place Central Washington. The Vikings took the men's crown by 81-1/2 points, 200-1/2 to 119, over host Puget Sound. In all, 12 schools participated in the meet. Zukowski had a winning time of 12.66 in the 100 and placed second in the 200 with a 26.27 clocking. She anchored the 4x100 relay, which won in 48.88, and ran the second leg on the victorious 4x400 relay that was clocked in 4:01.81. Also running on those relays were Sarah Brownell (Fr., Yelm) and Heidi Dimmitt (Jr., Wenatchee). Brownell won the women's 400 with a time of 58.55, the best in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this season; and Dimmitt took the 400 hurdles in 1:03.18, bettering her league-leading time. Two other event winners for the Western women were Gail Butler (Jr., Issaquah) in the long jump (16-7) and Megan Paulsen (Fr., Bellevue/Bellevue Christian) in the triple jump (35-7 3/4). The Vikings' Michelle Howe (Fr., Lakewood) had a GNAC-best 14.95 clocking as she placed second in the 100 hurdles. Cheryl Watson (Fr., Olympia) was runner-up in the 800, and Camille Clarke (Jr., Bellingham) and Christy Miller (Jr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) placed 1-2 in the pole vault, each clearing 10-2. Leading the Western men was Kevin Myhre (Jr., Edmonds/Meadowdale), who won the 400 hurdles (56.06), finished second in the 110 hurdles (16.03) and ran the third leg on the winning 4x100 relay (3:24.30). Another member of that relay was Ben Wargo (So., Pullman), who placed second in the 400 hurdles (56.38) and third in the 100 hurdles (16.18). Other Viking event winners were Keith Lemay (Sr., Lynden/Lynden Christian) in the 1500 (3:57.70), Ryan Brown (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) in the pole vault (15-5) and Bryant Michaelson (So., Lynden/Meridian) in the discus (137-6). Western's Nick Abraham (Fr., Issaquah/Skyline) was second in the 800 (1:59.09) as was Keefe Brockman (Fr., Richland/Hanford) in the high jump (6-5). The Vikings' Michael Hoffman (Fr., Bellingham/Sehome) placed third in both the discus (136-2) and shot put (44-7 1/2). Other thirds were turned in by Ben Dekock (Fr., Seabeck/Klahowya) in the javelin (177-5), Shane Gruger (Fr., Shoreline/Shorewood) in the long jump (21-3 1/2), Phillip Villanueva (Fr., Spanaway/Bethel) in the 400 hurdles (58.46) and Matt O'Connell (So., Sammamish/Skyline) in the 400 (50.30). Western plays host to the 27th annual Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic on Friday (2 p.m.) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium. |
