ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Western Washington University's Kevin Iverson (Jr., Mill Creek/Jackson) finished third in the decathlon and Clara Cook (Jr., Wenatchee) placed fifth in the heptathlon at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Multi-Events Championships which ended Tuesday at Tomlinson Stadium on the Central Washington University campus.

Western Oregon's Zeb Udell successfully defended his title in the decathlon (6,181) as did the Wolves' Jacque Postlewait in the heptathlon (4,615).

Iverson, who was sixth after the first day, had season bests in all five second-day events, finishing with the best time of 4:36.56 (702) in the 1,500 meters. He opened the day with a 17.61 (562) clocking in the 110 hurdles, and had marks of 95-5 (446) in the discus, 12-9 1/2 (590) in the pole vault and 121-4 (399) in the javelin.

"Kevin had an excellent competition," said Western coach Pee Wee Halsell. "All the way across, he did a great job. He had moved up two spots and we were excited about that, but then when he ran so well in the final event to move into third, we were ecstatic."

Cook, who had season bests in all seven events, moved up one spot to fifth, finishing with 3,960 points. She had marks of 15-2 1/4 (461) in the long jump and 92-1 (440) in the javelin, and ran the 800 meters in 2:32.44 (663).

The Vikings' Michelle Howe (Fr., Lakewood) fell three spots to place seventh with 3693 points.

"Both of them competed well," Halsell said. "They're both very raw and are only going to get better. Both of them had strong finishes in the 800."

Western's Alex Harrison (R-Fr., Edmonds/Edmonds-Woodway) competed only in the field events Tuesday because of a sprained ankle. Despite that, he had the top throw in the javelin of 169-5. Darren Edwards (So., Arlington), who suffered a pulled hamstring on the final turn of the 400 on Monday, scratched from the competition.
