BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University's Keith Lemay (Sr., Lynden/Lynden Christian) achieved his second national provisional qualifying time of the season in winning the men's 800 meters, highlighting Viking performances at the WWU Twilight Track and Field meet on Friday at Civic Stadium. Lemay won the 800 in 1:52.29, giving him provisional qualification for the NCAA Division II National Championships. He reached the national standard for the 1,500 last Saturday. Lemay also ran a leg on the victorious 4x400 relay (3:24.36). For Western's women, Sarah Porter (Fr., Hockinson) improved her provisional qualifying standard in the 5,000, winning in 17:37.48, breaking a meet record that had stood since 1983 by nearly 30 seconds. Last week, Porter set a school record in the 10,000 meters (36:45.24). Lemay and Porter are two of four Vikings to have provisional qualifying times in two events. The others are Jordan Welling (Fr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) and Bennett Grimes (So., Pocatello, ID), who have both established marks in the men's 5,000 and 10,000. The Vikings won five other individual women's events. Michelle Howe (Fr., Lakewood) won the 100 hurdles in 14.81, Heidi Dimmit (Jr., Wenatchee) took the 400 hurdles in 1:02.89, Clara Cook (Jr., Wenatchee) cleared 5-3 to claim the high jump over teammate Jill Rogers (Fr., Puyallup/Rogers) on fewer misses, Kasey Hostetler (Jr., Richland/Hanford) won the long jump (17-5 1/2) in her first competition of the year, and Erica Rance (Sr., Seattle/Renton) took the discus with a mark of 133-7. The Western women's 4x400 relay of Dimmit, Megan Zukowski (Fr., Maple Valley/Tahoma), Joana Houplin (Fr., Olympia) and Megan O'Connell (Fr., Sammamish/Skyline) also was victorious with a season-best time of 3:57.60. Christy Miller (Jr., Boise, ID/Bishop Kelly) was second in the pole vault, but improved her provisional qualifying mark by clearing 12-3 1/2. For the Western men, there were two additional individual winners. Kevin Myhre (Jr., Edmonds/Meadowdale) won the 400 hurdles in a season-best 54.69, and Ryan Brown (Fr., Bellingham/Squalicum) won the pole vault by clearing 15-3 as the Vikings took five of the top six places in the event. Lakia Arceneaux of Pacific Lutheran had the finest individual performance of the meet, winning the women's 100 (12.56) and 200 (25.89), placing second in the long jump (16-7) and running a leg of the victorious 4x100 relay (49.79). |
