BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Western Washington University freshman Jordan Welling has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week for March 30 to Apr. 5.

Welling, a graduate of Burlington-Edison (Wash.) High School, ran a NCAA Division II national provisional qualifying time of 14:34.08, the third fastest in GNAC history, last Friday as he placed sixth in his heat at the Stanford University Invitational.

Last fall, Welling earned all-conference honors in cross country, helping Western win the league title, place second at the West Regional and finish 11th at nationals.

Western hosts the 27th annual Ralph Vernacchia Team Classic on Friday (2 p.m.) at Bellingham's Civic Stadium.
