Western splits at Saint Martin's, take opener 2-1 in eight innings, lose nightcap 8-3

LACEY, Wash. - First baseman Meghan Flem (So., Hood River, OR/Hood River Valley) drove in the winning run with a two-out single in the top of the eighth inning and pitcher Sarah McEnroe (So., Woodinville) scattered four hits as Western Washington University edged Saint Martin's University, 2-1, in the opener of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Thursday at SMU Field.

The Vikings, who lost the nightcap 8-3, are 24-22 overall and 11-11 in league play.

Saint Martin's is 21-31 overall and 7-15 in GNAC action.

In the first game, McEnroe (5-10) struck out one and walked one, retiring 13 straight before the Saints' Lisa Holombo tied the score at 1-1, hitting her third home run of the season with one out in the seventh.

In the eighth, Western's Michelle Wrigley (Fr., Bothell/Inglemoor) reached first on a fielder's choice and continued to second on a throwing error, then scored on a single by Flem.

SMU pitcher Jamie Herrick (6-11) went the distance, allowing just six hits, striking out two and walking two.

The game's only other run came in the first when the Vikings' Jenna Mohrweis (Fr., Mill Creek/Jackson) walked and scored on a two-out single by Liza Teichler (Sr., Sammamish/Skyline).

Flem and Lisa Pendergrast (Sr., Burlington/Burlington-Edison) each had two hits for Western, and Kristi Sigafoos was 2-for-3 for the Saints.

In the second contest, Saint Martin's scored five times in the first, twice in the third and once in the third.

Two of the three Viking runs were unearned. In the first, Wrigley doubled and scored when Flem's fly ball to right field was dropped. In the third, Mohrweis doubled, went to third on a fly out and scored on a passed ball. In that same frame, Wrigley singled, advanced to third on a dropped fly ball and scored on an error by the shortstop.

Saints' pitcher Brandi Klemm (6-8) had the complete-game victory, giving up just three hits and retiring the last 11 batters she faced.

Krissy Bassett had a three-run homer, her second of the year, after Sigafoos doubled in the first run and Holly Morris had a RBI-single in Saint Martin's five-run first. Morris hit her 13th home run, a two-run shot, in the third and Alicia Fuchs doubled and scored on a single by Kristine Kaneshiro in the sixth.

The Saints had 14 hits, three by Sigafoos and two each by Morris, Danny White and Kaneshiro. Wrigley was 2-for-3 for Western with two runs scored.

The Vikings end their season Saturday (12 noon) with a GNAC doubleheader at Western Oregon.
