LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The University of Wyoming track and field program and head coach Don Yentes, announced the signing of another member to the 2008-09 Cowgirl squad in Afiya Walker of St. Augustine, Trinidad.

Walker, a transfer from the University of Trinidad and Tobago will compete next year as a sophomore in the indoor season and a junior for the outdoor season. She will run the 400-meter and 800-meter events for the Cowgirls. Walker has run personal best times of 56 seconds in the 400-meter dash and 2:10.20 in the 800-meter. Her 800 time would be good for second best all-time at the University of Wyoming, and fourth in the MWC this season.

"You can see by her times, she will be one of our top runners next year," said Yentes. "During my time here at UW, Afiya is one of the top middle distance runners we have ever brought in and she will make an instant impact next year."

Afiya was a silver medalist in the 800-meter race at this year's Carifta track and field championships, which involves competitors from all the Caribbean Islands.

"She is a tremendous runner and also a great student and in the long run that is more important," said Yentes.

Afiya plans to major in chemical engineering here at the University of Wyoming.
