UW's Kate Burton to Compete in U.S. Olympic Trials

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Kate Burton, of the University of Wyoming track and field team, will be traveling this week to Eugene, Ore., to compete in the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Thursday, July 3rd, at 8 p.m. (M.T.) in the hammer throw. "Training has been going very well as of late, she has been throwing PR's all week," said Paul Barrett, UW head throws coach. "I told Kate that there is no pressure on her and I just want her to have fun out there, competing against the best in the nation." Kate just completed her senior season at UW at the NCAA Championships with a tenth place finish. Her personal best is the current record at UW of 209' 8", which she set at the Front Range Invite in Laramie. The Vancouver, Wash., native will be close to home and will have plenty of family support as she looks to qualify for the finals on Saturday. "This meet will really open her eyes to her future if she wants to continue throwing. It will really show her what it takes and how she stacks up against the best," said Barrett.
24 competitors will compete in the preliminaries with the top 12 moving onto the finals on Saturday at 12:10 p.m. (M.T.) After the finals, the top three will move on to compete for the USA in the Olympics.
