For golfers that live in cold weather climates, the first time playing outside after winter is always an adventure, and the Wyoming Cowboys could claim no different on Monday at the Fresno State/Lexus Golf Classic.

The Cowboys played the first two of three scheduled rounds, shooting 306 (+18) and 309 (+21), which puts them last in the field of 20 teams. UW totaled 615 (+39).

Always a quality event, the participating squads include defending champion SDSU, who is ranked No. 34 by Golfstat, No. 45 Oregon, No. 48 TCU and No. 50 Texas, in addition to MWC rival BYU. The Aztecs lead the field by six strokes after 36 holes with a mark of 552 (-24). The Longhorns are second at 558.

"In a matter of days we went from hitting into a net to green grass and playing for scores," said Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen. "It is always a difficult transition and we could have opened with an easier event, but I think that playing a high-caliber tournament will pay dividends for us later in the season.

"I'm encouraged by my team and did see some good things from them today. We do need to improve though and I think we will come out and play better tomorrow."

Wyoming's best two-round score came from freshman Gabe Maier who shot 74 (+2) and 78 (+6), totaling 152 (+8). Fellow UW freshmen Phil Henzlik and Zach Zaremba tallied 153 (+9) and 154 (+10), respectively.

Playing as an individual, Long Beach State's Issei Suenaga leads the race for top medalist honors of 104 golfers with his total of 134 (-10). Two strokes back, SDSU's David Palm is in second place with a mark of 136 (-8).

The event is being held at Fort Washington Country Club, which measures 6,729 yards, par 72.
