The UC Davis Aggies successfully defended their team title on Tuesday at the sixth annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic, presented by Cleveland Golf in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Aggies scored seven-under par (833) and came from five strokes down to win by three over runner-up and Day One leader Grand Canyon (836). Idaho and Oregon State tied for third place at one-under par 839.

The Wyoming Cowboys shot their best round of the 54-hole, two-day event with a 287 (+7) in round three. UW placed 19th of 20 teams.

"We improved with every round, so I take some comfort in that," said Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen. "When we can put together three solid rounds, then we can compete in good fields like this. That is not far away for this young team.

"I'm pleased that the tournament ended competitively and I feel that this is a very good event for us to be able to host. The exposure we receive benefits the University of Wyoming and our golf program."

No. 15 ranked Boise State senior Troy Merritt, who was in fifth place after the first two rounds, came from behind and shot 66 (-4) in the final round to take individual medalist honors. Merritt's 54-hole total was 202 (-8). Jason Kang of UCLA and Paul Peterson from Oregon State tied for second place, one stroke back of Merritt at 203 (-7). Freshman Gabe Maier was Wyoming's best finisher with his three-round mark of 217 (+7). Maier tied for 56th place of 120 players.

The Cowboy Classic was played at the North Course at Talking Stick, which is 7,133 yards and par 70.

Wyoming's next event is the BYU Cougar Classic, April 18-19 in Provo, Utah.
