Cowgirls Back On the Road Against Cougars

LARAMIE, Wyo. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball team will head back out on the road to close out their week. They will take on the BYU Cougars, Saturday, February 2, in Provo, Utah. The game is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.

Wyoming is currently 18-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play after suffering a heartbreaking 60-59 loss against the Utah Utes on Wednesday night. They are currently ranked 15th in the Associated Press Poll and 16th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll. Senior Hanna Zavecz leads the way for UW averaging 14.7 points and 3.9 assists, which ranks fourth in the Mountain West Conference. She is followed by fellow senior Justyna Podziemska who is adding 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds, while Aubrey Vandiver is chipping in 11.8 points and a team leading 6.5 rebounds per game. The Cowgirls are leading the MWC in scoring defense allowing just 52.0 points per contest, assist to turnover ratio (15.5/13.1, 1.19) and blocked shots (5.45 bpg). They are also shooting .427 (445-1042) from the field, .335 (136-406) from beyond the arc and .696 (696) from the free throw line.

BYU is currently 10-8 overall and 4-2 in the MWC after a 52-47 victory over Air Force on Wednesday night. The Cougars are led by Mallary Carling who is averaging 14.4 points and 3.7 rebounds. She is followed by Lauren Varley who is adding 7.8 points and a team leading 8.7 rebounds. They return two starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went 23-10 overall and 12-4 in the MWC a year ago. This is the 63rd meeting between the two schools. BYU leads the series 44-18. The last time the two teams met was February 15, 2007 as the Cougars defeated Wyoming 69-62 in Laramie. BYU is coached by Jeff Judkins who is in his seventh season with the program.
