Wyoming Women's Golf Moves up Three Spots at Thompson Invite :: UW is tied for eighth place with one round remaining.

Comparing scores from one round to the next in golf is not always a telling statistic about the success of a team or player, and such was the case on Tuesday for the Wyoming Cowgirl golf team. UW played the second of three rounds at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane'ohe, O'ahu, Hawaii, and although the Cowgirls scored six strokes higher than the previous days' round, they jumped up three spots in the team standings due to more difficult course conditions and higher scores across the board.

Wyoming managed a mark of 320 (+32) on the second day and now has a two-round total of 634 (+58). UW shot 314 (+26) on Monday.

The Cowgirls are tied for eighth place with Memphis out of 16 teams, up from 11th on Monday. Columbia is a mere one stroke ahead of both teams at 633 (+57), while Yale is at 626 and in sixth.

Nationally ranked No. 9 Oklahoma State caught Day One leader No. 7 Arizona in the team standings and both schools have a 36-hole total of 587 (+11) heading into the final round. No. 4 Arizona State is third at 594 (+18), with Hawai`i (605) and UTEP (623) in the four and five spots.

"The pin placements were more difficult today and the wind continues to be a factor," said Cowgirl head coach Josey Stender. "I'm sure the course will be even more difficult tomorrow, however everyone is playing in the same conditions and we just need to continue to play to the best of our ability. All things considered, our team feels pretty good about their scores and the position we have put ourselves in."

Wyoming's low rounds on Tuesday came from a pair of sophomores, Sarah Fogerty and Jonelle Martinez. Fogerty scored 79 (+7) and has UW's best position in the field of 91 players, as she is tied for 28th place at 157 (+13). Martinez had a team-best mark of 78 (+6) and is at 159 (+15) after two rounds. Sandwiched between the two is senior Lindsay Bauknecht at 158 (+14).

UW junior Mikala Henzlik has totaled 161 (+17), while senior Laura Mengelkamp is at 162 (+18).

In the overall individual standings, UA's Alison Walshe is in first place at 140 (-4). Two strokes back is Anna Nordqvist of ASU with a mark of 142, while fellow Sun Devil Azahara Munoz, as well as OSU's Pernilla Lindberg and Karin Kinnerud are at 146.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Hawaii, will conclude with a final round of 18 holes on Wednesday. Teams are playing the Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course, which measures 5,907 yards and is par 72.
