Cowgirls Edge Lumberjacks, Earn 4-3 Win

Feb. 22, 2008

BOISE, Idaho -

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team moved to 5-3 overall this spring with a close 4-3 victory against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, on Friday afternoon, in Boise.

"This was a very good victory for us today," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "We lost 4-3 against them last season, so I think it shows the progress we are making as a team. I was also proud of how freshman Rebecca Berger came back in her match to pull out the victory for us."

In doubles play, the Cowgirls would take two out of three matches to come away with the point. At the number one spot, the Wyoming team of Berger and Corina Lazar defeated Paij Porter and Edit Suhajda, 8-6. UW's Brittany DeFelice and Jamie Nelson also earned an 8-4 victory over Kim Van Ginkel and Orsi Golovics. The Cowgirl team of Michelle Brown and Carly Van Hollen came up short, 8-5, against Amiee Oki and Stephanie Vallegos.

In singles play, the Cowgirls would take victories at the number two, five and six spots to earn the win. At the number five spot sophomore Sarah Summerfield earned a two set win, 6-2, 6-3, over Yumi Hasegawa, as did DeFelice against Oki, 6-3, 6-1. It would come down to the freshman, Berger who earned a tough 7-5, 6-2 win against Stacey Pinchbeck at the number two position.

Wyoming will continue play as they take on the Boise State Broncos, on Saturday, February 23. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m.
