Cowgirls Beat Spartans, 4-3

March 19, 2008

SAN JOSE, Calif. -

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team (9-4 overall, 1-0 in the MWC) opened up their three match road trip with a 4-3 victory against the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday afternoon in San Jose.

"I was pleased with the way we started off this road trip," said UW head coach Krissy Hall. "This was a good way to get our first match playing outside under our belt. Despite not playing our best we found a way to pull out a victory, and hopefully this will carry on into our next couple of matches."

Wyoming won the doubles point by winning all three matches. It started with the number one UW team of Rebecca Berger and Corina Lazar earning an 8-3 victory over Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone. Wyoming's Michelle Brown and Carly Van Hollen defeated Jennifer Williams and Silvana Dukic, 8-6, while Cowgirls Brittany DeFelice and Jamie Nelson closed it out with an 8-3 win against Dana Popescu and Rokie Larijani.

Wyoming would win matches at the one, five and six singles positions in order to secure the victory. Lazar earned a two set win, 7-6, 6-2, win over Tavita, while DeFelice defeated Williams, 6-1, 6-4. It would come down to Cowgirl sophomore Sarah Summerfield at the number five position to decide the team outcome, and Summerfield came through with a three set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, win over Popescu. It was close in the other matches as Van Hollen fell in three sets, 7-6, 6-7, 10-8, against Sanda Hadzisabic, as did Brown against Dukic, 6-0, 1-6, 6-2. Berger also fell short in her match, 7-5, 6-4, against Silverstone.

Wyoming will resume play on Thursday, March 20, against the Saint Mary's Gaels beginning at noon Mountain Time.
