NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Wayne State University baseball team (0-1) opened its 2008 season with a 5-2 loss to seventh-ranked Grand Valley State (1-0) in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon in Nashville.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) had two hits apiece to lead the Warriors offensively.
Wayne State struck first in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.), plating Hines who doubled to lead off the frame. Ranck would later score on a GVSU error, giving the Warriors a 2-0 advantage.
The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Lakers put three across in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Bobby Walmsley and a two-run double by Dan Anstedt.
Two more runs in the seventh sealed the victory for the Lakers, who have won 11 straight over the Warriors dating back to the 2005 campaign.
Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) took the loss for WSU, surrendering three earned runs on four hits in six innings. Bass (0-1) walked just one while striking out seven. John Kessick (Niles, Mich.) made his Wayne State debut in relief, giving up two runs (one unearned) in two innings with a pair of strikeouts.
