NASHVILLE, Tenn. - In a 10-inning thriller, the Wayne State baseball team (1-1) evened its record with a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky (0-2) on Sunday evening in Nashville.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) delivered the game-winning RBI single to give the Warriors their first win of the season. WSU starter Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) was brilliant on the mound, taking a no-hitter into the ninth inning and recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.
A base hit by Drew Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) in the third scored Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), who previously walked and stole second, to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
The Norse were held off the board until a leadoff single by Kevin Dusold in the ninth. He would eventually come around to score on a two-out pinch hit by Jason Cisper.
Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford) led off the 10th inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.), and scored on a two-out single to left by Williams.
Justin Mazur (Macomb, Mich./De La Salle) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief to earn the victory (1-0).
Wayne State travels to Quincy next weekend (Mar. 1-2) for a three-game series.
