EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Wayne State baseball team (2-1) battled to a 6-3 victory in 10 innings at Southern Indiana (4-7) in the first game of a doubleheader Monday afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Michael Wiseman's (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) pinch-hit RBI single with two outs broke a 3-3 tie in the 10th inning, capped off with a two-run homer by Drew Churchward (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer).
The Warriors, who had not played in two weeks due to cancellations forced by inclement weather, totaled 11 hits and were led offensively by Tony Hines (Detroit, Mich./Mumford), who was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double and a run batted in. Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) recorded two hits and a run scored apiece.
John Kessick (Niles, Mich.) notched his first victory in a WSU uniform, striking out five of the six batters he faced over the final two innings.
Southern Indiana took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Kevin O'Hair, but two USI errors in the fifth led to a two-run single by Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova), plating Matt Cunningham (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea) and Witczak.
After the Screaming Eagles tied it up in the bottom of the fifth, Hines led off the sixth inning with a solo shot to left. A base hit by Alex Thieroff brought home pinch-runner Chad Bruce in the eighth to knot the score again.
Ranck opened the 10th inning with a single, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Scott Martin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), and scored the go-ahead run on Wiseman's base hit.
Wayne State starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) surrendered two runs on six hits in five innings and totaled five strikeouts. Josh Lewis (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North) pitched three relief innings, giving up a run on three hits and fanning two in his debut.
