EVANSVILLE, Ind. - In the second game of Monday's doubleheader, the Wayne State baseball team (2-2) suffered a 9-0 loss at Southern Indiana (5-7).
The Screaming Eagles scored in each of the first four innings, beginning with an RBI double by Wes Fink in the opening frame. Back-to-back three-run innings and Fink's solo home run in the fourth put the home team ahead by eight.
An RBI groundout by Chad Bruce made it 9-0 in the sixth inning.
Singles by Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), Charlie Dunneback (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge), Caleb Dalman (Hudsonville, Mich.) and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) accounted for WSU's only offense against USI starter Jeremy Kehrt (2-1), who struck out seven in the complete-game shutout.
Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) took the loss (0-1), lasting just two innings. Tyler Loehr (Brighton, Mich.) and Brett Shankin (Washington, Mich./Romeo) made their collegiate debuts in relief around Brady Cooper (Allen Park, Mich.), who pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
Wayne State travels to Florida this week to face Saint Leo on Wednesday night before heading to Tampa to face the defending NCAA Division II champion Saturday and Sunday.
