TAMPA, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team (2-4) lost the first game of a doubleheader, 6-1, at the seventh-ranked University of Tampa (18-4-1), the defending NCAA Division II champion, on Saturday afternoon.
An RBI single by Jose Jimenez put Tampa on the board in the first inning, and three hits in the second led to four more runs. A two-run double by Jesus Barroso between RBI singles by Paul Cruz and Jimenez gave the Spartans a 5-0 lead. Cruz would drive in another run in the fourth.
Starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.), who went the distance for the Warriors, held Tampa off the scoreboard for the final four innings. Bass (0-2) walked a pair and struck out seven.
The Warriors spoiled the shutout bid of Tampa starter Scott Chapman (5-2) in the top of the ninth, as Charlie Dunneback (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge) led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on a base hit by Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine).
