TAMPA, Fla. - The Wayne State baseball team (2-5) saw its losing skid reach four games following its second straight 6-1 loss at the seventh-ranked University of Tampa (19-4-1) on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors managed just three hits against the defending NCAA Division II champions, two of which came off the bat of Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.).
A base hit by Paul Cruz in the bottom of the first plated Junior Mejia, who led off the inning with a triple. The Warriors responded quickly, however, as Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) scored on a passed ball to tie the game in the second.
Four hits and a WSU error led to two Tampa runs in the third, and the Spartans tacked on three more in the sixth, including a two-run homer by Leo Alvarez.
Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) suffered the loss (0-2) for WSU, working 5.2 innings and surrendering five earned runs on 11 hits. Tampa's Joshua Bowman earned his first win of the year, and Anthony Perez notched a two-inning save.
Wayne State and Tampa will square off again tomorrow afternoon in a single game starting at 12:00 p.m. ET.
