ERIE, Pa. - The Wayne State baseball team (3-7, 1-0 GLIAC) opened the conference portion of its schedule with a 6-1 victory at Gannon (2-5, 0-1 GLIAC) in the first game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
WSU starter Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.), who took a shutout into the sixth inning, went the distance to pick up his first win of the season (1-2). Bass surrendered seven hits and a walk while totaling a career-high 13 strikeouts.
Wayne State scored the first run of the game without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine), who led off the game with a walk, stole two bases and scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova).
Aided by a Gannon error in the third, Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly and LaPensee followed with an RBI double to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.
A base hit by LaPensee between walks to Ranck and Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) loaded the bases for Charlie Dunneback (Lansing, Mich./Grand Ledge), who smacked a three-run double to center in the top of the fifth.
Two WSU errors contributed to Gannon's unearned run in the bottom of the sixth.
NOTES
Bass' strikeout total marks the highest by a WSU hurler since Tim Miller fanned 13 against Wisconsin-Platteville on March 18, 1999, in Panama City, Fla. ... Bass also posted his eighth career complete game ... Gannon had eight consecutive games postponed due to inclement weather and poor field conditions prior to Friday's opener ... the Warriors, who snapped a six-game losing streak, have won their last 13 meetings with the Golden Knights.
