ERIE, Pa. - In the second game of Saturday's twinbill, the Wayne State baseball team (8-7, 6-0 GLIAC) edged Mercyhurst (12-9, 1-5 GLIAC), 1-0, to record its second shutout win of the day.
Dane Little (Windsor, Ont./F.J. Brennan Catholic) surrendered just two hits and three walks in the complete-game victory, while Brett Witczak (Hudsonville, Mich.) drove in the lone run of the game.
In the second inning Ryan LaPensee (LaSalle, Ont./St. Thomas of Villanova) singled, stole second, and came in to score on Witczak's base hit to right center.
Little (2-2), who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, struck out five Lakers over seven innings for his first career shutout. Mercyhurst starter Eric Drobotij (1-1) fanned 10 and gave up just four hits in the loss.
Matthew Williams (Detroit, Mich./Royal Oak Shrine) and Derek Ranck (Clarkston, Mich.) accounted for the other two Warrior hits.
Wayne State and Mercyhurst will play another doubleheader Sunday in Erie beginning at noon.
NOTES
Wayne State's last 1-0 win was April 9, 2005 against Mercyhurst, the first of two shutouts that day ... LaPensee is a perfect 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts this season ... he and Williams each have three-game hitting streaks ... the Warriors are 8-0 this season when leading after six innings.
